Lonely Planet, one of the most important guides in the world, has praised Maroma Press’s publication Between two fires: the guerrilla war in the Spanish mountains.

To investigate what happened in those years when strict censorship isolated Spain from the rest of the world, author Baird interviewed former guerrillas, civil guards, villagers and their families.

He checked official files from all over Spain and traveled to London and Washington to examine government records relating to the US and British intervention in Spain.

After the Second World War, neither the Europeans nor the Americans were very interested in what was happening in Spain, although their secret services were very active in that country. Thus, the guerrilla warfare and many other events in Spain were not reported in the rest of the world.

Within Spain political parties were prohibited and all news was carefully controlled. Only information approved by the regime may be published or disseminated. Finally, after the death of General Franco in 1975, censorship was relaxed and researchers were able to begin to delve into the recent history of the country.

This pioneering book reveals details about the clandestine training of Spanish guerrillas by members of the US secret service and about a brutal crime that was covered up for more than 50 years.
