As the Atlanta Falcons’ first draft pick in the 2001 National Football League, following a stellar college career at Virginia Tech, Michael Vick had everything going for him. It didn’t take long for him to show the world that it was real.

With everything going for him, Michael Vick was fast becoming one of the NFL’s all-time greatest quarterbacks, placing him alongside great notables like Montana, Elway, Staubach, Graham, and Namath, to name a few. There is no doubt that Michael Vick will one day be in the Professional Football Hall of Fame, but will his love of dogs or dogfighting overshadow all his accomplishments?

Michael Vick was charged by a grand jury with allegedly running a dogfighting ring, called “Bad Newz Kennels. If convicted, he could serve up to six years in prison and a $ 350,000 fine. In the indictment, it is said that Vick arranged, financed and wagered on dogfighting, dating back to 2001. Is this the Michael Vick that everyone knows?

Dog fighting has been around since the early 1800s. It used to be found mainly in the south, but today it can be found in some form throughout the country. It is no longer gaining popularity during the last decade. According to the Humane Society, which is the governing body that tries to eradicate this type of activity, there are more than 40,000 people involved in this inhumane sport.

Dog fighting is prohibited by law in all but two of the fifty states. Will this new light push the two remaining states to ban this activity? Only time will tell. It is obvious that this activity annoys the general population, as evidenced by the comments that are left all over the web that have something to do with Michael Vick or animal rights.

There is a lot of pressure on the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons, and state governments to make an example of Michael Vick. This makes you wonder, what happened to innocents until they are found guilty? Are we going to hang him up before he fights back? He reportedly owned the house where the crimes were committed, but did not live there. Is it, as Michael says, “someone close to me is taking advantage of my good fortune and generosity”?
