There are two major satellite television companies in the US, DISH Network and DIRECTV, which carry a variety of television shows, movies, news programs, sporting events, special events, and radio programs via satellite.

DIRECTV Review

DIRECTV was launched in 1994 by Hughes Electronics and was the world’s first high-power DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) service.

DIRECTV is currently the largest satellite television company, with more than 16 million subscribers, and ranks highest in customer satisfaction among all cable and satellite television companies by JD Power and Associates.

DIRECTV Programming Review

DIRECTV has more than 256 channels of satellite TV programming and offers 6 programming packages.

Their basic package, The Family Package, has 45 channels of shows for $29.99 a month. Their most popular package, the Choice Xtra package, has over 200 channels for $34.99 a month, and their top of the line package, the Total Choice Premier package has over 265 channels for $81.99 a month.

DIRECTV also offers pay-per-view programming, more than 130 HD (high definition) channels, adult channels and international programming.

Compared to DISH Network, DIRECTV has the most HD channels and the most sports programming.

DIRECTV Team Review

The equipment you need to receive DIRECTV programming includes a television satellite dish, satellite television receivers, and remote controls. This equipment is currently free when you subscribe to one of DIRECTV’s programming packages and comes with free installation.

DIRECTV offers optional DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) and HD Receivers. Both are free.

DISH Network Review

DISH Network is currently the fastest growing satellite television company with more than 14 million subscribers, and also ranks highest in customer satisfaction among all cable and satellite television companies.

DISH Network Programming Review

DISH Network offers 365 channels of satellite television programming and 5 program packages.

Its starter package, the Dish Family Pak, has 40 channels for $19.99 a month. Their most popular package, the America’s Top 200 package, has over 230 channels for $44.99 a month. And their top-of-the-line “Everything” package has 365 channels of shows for $94.99 a month.

DISH Network also offers pay-per-view programming, over 120 HD channels, adult channels and sports packages.

When you compare DISH Network to DIRECTV, you’ll find that they have the most movies, shows, game channels, and international channels.

DISH Network Equipment Review

The equipment you need to receive DISH Network programming (a satellite dish, satellite TV receivers, and remote controls) is free when you subscribe to one of DISH Network’s program packages. The installation of the system is also free.

DISH Network currently offers free DVRs and free HD receivers.
