Art display in your child’s room: 6 safety tips

Special care must be taken when a room that was previously used by an adult is to be prepared for a child. Certain elements, such as artwork, may need to be removed or relocated to make the room more kid-friendly. Read on for some tips to ensure your child’s safety in their bedroom.

Don’t hang artwork next to the bed.

Don’t place the crib or toddler bed against a wall with artwork hanging on it. The wall against which the bed is placed should not have anything hanging on it. If there is something hanging on the wall, it should be placed high enough so that it is not easily accessible. If the art is placed too low, your child may reach or kick it, causing it to fall and injure itself. You don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night with your screaming baby only to find a half-ton framed piece of art crushing it on your cot.

Avoid framing art

To be safe, it is best not to frame the artwork. This can make the art look like a poster, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. A framed piece of art can add unnecessary weight and cause injury if it comes off the wall and falls on your child.

Choose small pieces of art.

If you still want to frame it, choose a lightweight frame that won’t weigh it down. Choose art pieces that are small in size; that way, even after framing them, they won’t weigh much. Use plastic frames that are lightweight. Make sure the artwork is protected by a piece of acrylic and not glass. You can also get creative and make the frames yourself, saving money in the process.

Keep it out of the reach of little hands.

When you hang artwork on the wall, please place it at the right height so that your child cannot easily reach it. Even if the artwork is not framed, your child could easily reach it and damage it by tearing it.

Do not display framed pictures on the shelf or table

You may have seen interior design magazines where small pieces of art or pictures are framed in a picture frame and then placed on a mantel or table top. Presenting art this way is creative and may be more suitable for an adult’s room, but avoid placing art this way in your child’s room, especially if they are still a baby or toddler. Again, safety is the concern here: a framed picture sitting loosely on a table could easily be thrown off and sent flying across the room, accidentally or otherwise.

Do not put a mirror in your child’s room

It’s obvious what kind of damage or injury this could cause if it were to fall and break. Remove all mirrors from the room – your child doesn’t need them.

There you have it: some helpful tips for parents to use when preparing a room for their precious little one.

Enjoy!
