Book Series Review – The House of Night

A fictional work by Kristin Cast and PC Cast, set in modern times. The story revolves around various Cherokee legends, and most of the characters are beings known as vampires. There are many buildings throughout the world that serve as schools for vampires, called the Houses of Night.

In the middle of Tulsa, Oklahoma, main character Zoey Heffer receives a shocking surprise, when a vampire tracker arrives in the middle of the school and marks her as a fledgling vampire.

Zoey then runs to her grandmother Sylvia’s lavender farm, only to be knocked unconscious. She then has a vision, in which she sees the goddess Nyx, the incarnation of night and patroness of vampires. Then her grandmother takes her to the Tulsa House of Night, where she meets the high priestess Neferet, whose intentions seem very unclear to the new rookie. Neferet then introduces Zoey to the House of Night and why it exists. She also tells Zoey that she also has the option to change her name, saying that being born into a new life as a Rookie means the birth of a new you, as well as a new name for yourself. The new Rookie wastes no time in changing her name to Zoey Redbird, the nickname used by her grandmother.

As he wanders the halls, he comes across a beautiful face and a beautiful girl, in the midst of an “intimate” moment. She only later finds out that the two faces she saw were the most popular couple in school. Erik Night and Aphrodite.

Later in the first book, there is a kind of full moon ritual, which is done every month. During the ritual, students and staff gather in Nyx’s sanctuary. The five elements are invoked, air, fire, water, earth and spirit.

When each element is invoked, Zoey feels things. When air is invoked, she feels a cool breeze, when fire is invoked, she feels warm and comforted, when water is invoked, she can hear the waves lapping on the shore, when earth is invoked, she smells the grassy plains and can practically feel the grass. and soles brushing against her feet. When she summons the last element, the spirit, she feels a rush of all four elements, as well as a sense of strength.

The troubled young rookie then asks her new friends, Stevie Rae Johnson, Shaunee Cole, Erin Bates and Damien Maslin, what could be wrong with her? Instead of putting her down for it, the group actually thinks that they might have an affinity for all five elements. An event like that hasn’t happened in a long time. To test their theory, the gang has a small event of their own, involving a ritual that invokes all five elements. To your amazement, each one has an affinity of its own. Damien was endowed with an affinity for air, Shaunee for fire, Erin for water, and Stevie Rae for earth.

Now, in order not to give away too much about the series, I won’t say much more. There is a very nice little detail there. The series takes on a number of Cherokee legends. Like the legend of Kalona. Kalona Ayeliski aka Raven Mocker (imitator), the worst of all evil spirits in Cherokee legends. She is considered to be the “Angel of Death”. Because of this, the point man in a Cherokee attack was named Kalona. It was also a women’s parade. He pounced on the villages and raped the women. Most of the time, she would have the offspring of man and raven, known as Raven Mockers. The creatures were in human form, but with the head and wings of a raven.

Tired of Kalona and his ways, Cherokee elders from separate villages banded together to create a woman who was so irresistible, so stunning and stunning, that Kalona would fall instantly in love with her. One of the women molded a body out of clay. Another of her gave him a beautiful face and alluring hair. Another of her endowed her with incredible speed. And another one of her gave her an outfit that really made her beautiful. Having made her creation, the four women brought the creation to life, naming it Aya. She immediately did what she was created to do. She seduced Kalona and made him want her. But he would never have her. She led him through the woods, using her speed to get away from him, but not so fast that she lost him. She took him to a cave. Just as they entered the cave, the Crow Mockers followed their father into the cave. Kalona grabbed her and tried to attack her, but the Cherokee women had collapsed the cave, trapping Aya, Kalona, and the Raven Mockers in the cave forever.

This mythos was interpreted in the series with Kalona being falsely depicted as Erebus Incarnate, awakened by the blood of the earth spilling onto the ground where he was buried, which happened to be conveniently located where the evildoer could reach.

A stunning and addictive series, Kristin and PC Cast’s House of Night novels are simply wonderful. A must read for almost anyone interested in fantasy worlds and vampires. As for romances, you may be a little disappointed with how things are going. For Zoey, he feels anguish and betrayal by who he believed to be her true love. Erin is seduced by the wrong people. Damien feels true happiness with the person he loves, but is traumatized when disaster strikes. Stevie Rae is stabbed in the back by a handsome hunk who isn’t what she seems.

With surprising and unexpected twists, this truly has to be Kristin and PC Cast’s best work ever.
