Car hire in Muscat – Some things to know before you hit the road
When in Muscat, renting a car can save you a lot of travel time and hassle. However, before you go, make sure you understand the traffic rules and driving prerequisites required by the Roman Oman Police (ROP).
Driver’s license and insurance requirements
If you are on a short-term visit and decide to hire a car in Muscat, you must possess a valid international driver’s license to take advantage of the services. Even a US driver’s license will do.
It is mandatory for anyone renting a car to make proper arrangements to obtain insurance against injury, damage to the vehicle, or even death. Most rental agencies will provide these coverages as part of your rental, but if they don’t, you’ll have to make arrangements yourself.
Running a red light can cost you dearly!
Traffic regulations in Oman and Muscat in particular can be quite severe even by American standards. Violations such as running a red light will result in detention without the possibility of bail for up to 48 hours, including tertiary legal action in some serious cases, such as confiscation of passport or driving license.
Other Traffic Violations to Avoid
Driving under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a seat belt while driving, and talking on a cell phone on the road are other serious traffic violations. If you are caught doing so, you could be severely fined with additional actions such as imprisonment and deportation.
driving manners
Roundabouts are very common in Muscat. The thing to remember, however, is that the vehicle in the inside lane has the right of way. Also, you may not turn right at a red light unless the signal to do so is present at that intersection.
If a car behind you is flashing its high beam continuously, then you want to pass it. It will be smart to let the driver do it.
In case of any mishap on the road, call the ROP hotline – 9999, and do not leave the scene until the authorities arrive.
