Clutter and hoarding: recession proof

You’ve heard the “R” word everywhere these days: recession. So how do you make yourself recession proof? You could make more money one day or you could save some money today. How do you do it? You stretch your dollar and lift your spirits.

You can usually do one of two things about this problem: save money or make more money. Yes, you may one day find a better paying job, but it’s pretty easy to find some ways to save money. What’s the secret to feeling like a big spender without spending a lot of money? You will discover that everything is in the feeling you create around what you are doing.

Treasure hunt

There are little pockets of “money saved” throughout your home. These are small items that you use frequently, but seem to be out of stock frequently. These can be hangers, pens, sticky notes, notebooks, baskets, candles, small ones that you would replace if they ran out.

Instead, go on a “scavenger hunt” – shop at your own home. Make it fun as if you were Indiana Jones or a pirate looking for buried treasure. While you’re at it, clean up the clutter and throw out a few pieces of trash. Take a nice basket or a tote bag with you to collect all your goodies. Who knows what treasures you will find!

Buy small, celebrate big

Do you want to buy? Buy something interesting but inexpensive. Look for places like a good consignment store, the “sale” shelf at your favorite store, or garage sales. Then celebrate and pay close attention to your new treasure as if you just bought a shiny new Rolls Royce. Treat it like a priceless work of art or one of the Crown Jewels. You will get the emotional satisfaction with a small dent in your wallet.

Collect and gift or sell

This is like the first two ideas rolled into one. You are collecting to give away things or to sell at a yard sale. Imagine the comforting smiles of people who fall in love with something that is simply clutter in their home.

You can help someone else have the joy of shopping small and celebrating big. Gather just a few things that could bring someone else happiness, and then take them to a friend’s yard sale or a thrift store. As you give gifts, watch your heart open for more joy and peace.
