Grandma’s Stewed Beef and Meatballs

1 pound………………(500 g)……………………braised meat

3 tablespoons…..(45ml)……………………flour

1 clove garlic

salt and pepper to taste

1 medium onion, chopped

3 carrots

1 turnip, diced

1 bay leaf

Cut the meat into cubes. Pass through flour and brown in hot oil.

Add the chopped onions and garlic. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Stir until onion is golden. Add enough water to cover

the meat. Bring to a boil. Cook on low heat for 1 ½ -2 hours.

Add the rest of the vegetables ½ hour before serving the stew.

YIELD: serves 4-6

TIME: 15 minutes of preparation, approx. 2 hours of cooking

dumplings

2 cups………………………….(500 ml)…………………all purpose flour

4 teaspoons………………(20 ml)………………baking powder

½ teaspoon………………(2.5ml)………………salt

2 tablespoons………………(30 ml)………………butter

¾ cup…………………………(185 ml)………………milk

Sift the flour. Add the yeast and salt and sift again.

Cut the butter and add the milk. Fall into stew over low heat

gently, being careful not to drop a piece of meat or vegetable

1 pound…………………….(500 g)………………butter or margarine

3 cups…………………….(750 ml)………………flour

1 cup…………………….(250 ml)…………icing sugar

at 350 F, (175 C), until lightly golden.

YIELD: Makes approximately 5 dozen cookies

CALORIES: approximately 80 calories per cookie

TIME: 1 hour (includes cooking and cleaning time)

Germs and cooking are like a married couple, always close. germs really love
the kitchen, especially sponges, kitchen towels and sinks. You can disinfect all three by soaking sponges and dish towels for 5 to 10 minutes in the sink in a solution of ¾ cup Clorax Regular Bleach and a gallon of water. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.

You can use the same solution to sanitize food spills, refrigeration, door handles.

Touching surfaces that have germs on them, like faucets, can spread bacteria,
cutting boards, tables, phones, light switches, anything touched by humans, animals.

Tips to remove stains
In previous issues we covered most stain removal tips. if you are new

Mix 50-50 water, white vinegar. Ideal for tough carpet stains.

Wooden furniture; To remove water stains, apply white toothpaste
on the stain. Allow the paste to dry and then buff gently with a soft cloth.

This works just as well on any paint or wallpaper.

TIPS
Cooking cabbage has less odor when a celery stalk is added to the pot.

Clean dusty candles with an alcohol-soaked cloth.

Campers, scrub the bottom of the pots with a bar of soap and
wash off in a jiffy.

When baking a cake and running out of eggs, use 1 tsp (5 ml)
vinegar and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of baking soda.

apple cocktail

½ ounce apple schnapps

½ ounce apple cider

¼ ounce gin

¼ ounce brandy

Shake with ice cubes. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Trader Vic’s Rum Fizz

1 ½ ounces light Puerto Rican rum

1 ounce lemon juice

2 teaspoons of stick sugar

1 egg

½ ounce cream soda

grated orange peel

Shake all ingredients except orange zest in an electric mixer (or
in a shaker tin with a mixing glass) with ice cubes. Effervescent Strain
glass. Sprinkle with grated orange peel.

fresh fruit punch

8 ounces of orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice.

1 bottle of ginger beer. Sugar to taste.

Combine the juices with the sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves and
refrigerate. Add the ginger ale plus ice cubes before serving.
