Installing flexible LED string and strip lights on your deck or dock

Can you install LIGHTING CABLE on your DECK and/or DOCK? YES – For years we have had string lights on our dock that started with decorating the dock area during the holidays. They’re easy to install, fairly inexpensive, and cast just the right amount of discreet, indirect ambient lighting.

For those who want to have rope lights as a more permanent form of accent lighting, there are rope lights built for this purpose. WATERPROOF FLEXIBLE LED STRIP LIGHTS are made specifically for outdoors.

Flexible, waterproof LED strip lights offer the perfect solution for creating stylish, energy-efficient ambient and accent lighting. The strip lights are discreet, flexible, and can be cut to fit your area, and since they come with a strong adhesive, they can be mounted virtually anywhere. Available in multiple colors, you can create special effects on virtually any surface, marine, car, and/or home.

Steps to Install String Lights: The simplest and most common method of installing string lights is to nail them to the surface with cable clips. You need cable clips, a hammer, a power supply and rope lighting. The time required for installation depends on the length of the rope.

1. Decide where to install the string lights: Choose where you want to install the string lights. In most cases, cable lighting is installed on the ceiling, ceiling joists, or floor deck to produce the desired results. Consider the position of the power source to make sure your cord will reach the plug.
2. Mount the rope lighting: use the hammer to fasten the lighting on the surface. Slide the rope into the open arcs of the cable clamps during installation while twisting it into the desired pattern. Make sure the hammer doesn’t miss the target when hitting the clips because it can destroy the string lighting.
3. Test your outlet: turn off the plug and connect the rope lighting. Use the extension cord if the length of the lighting cord does not reach the outlet. Turn on the plug to see if it lights up.

Quick answers to the most common questions
• Do I need a controller for my light strips? A controller is optional, but adds the ability to turn lights on and off and control other functions, such as dimming.
• Can I connect several strips? Strips can be connected end to end up to several meters depending on your product.

Steps to install flexible LED strip lighting with solderless connectors:

1. Materials Needed – Have all materials ready. You will need scissors, flexible LED strip lights, a connector, a ruler (if needed), and a pair of hands.
2. Measure how many feet of LED strip you need: Your LED strip light may be shipped to you in a roll (16 feet) or by the foot, depending on the quantity ordered. Decide how much flexible LED lighting strip you will need for your project. Since the LED strip can only be cut every third LED, you may need to go a little over or under your desired spec.
3. How to cut the LED strip: As you can see below, the flexible light strip can only be cut along the designated lines. Take a pair of sharp scissors and cut along the line.
4. Pay attention to the positive and negative markings – IMPORTANT: Look at the positive and negative sides of the LED strip light. This is important for the next steps. Sometimes when you cut the LED strip light things can get mixed up.
5. Connector introduction – Each connector has two sides. To ensure you have the correct side up, make sure the wider white side is facing up. This is the top. BE GENTLE and remove the cable lock. Do not pull on the wires to do this as the connector is fragile.
6. Fixing the connector to the LED strip – IMPORTANT: Color does not always matter! Be sure to follow the positive side of the flex strip down through the connector cable to the power supply. Red/black can mean (+) or (-) depending on which side you connected the connector to.
7. Attaching the tray to the LED light: In the example below, if we were to connect the connector to the other side of the flexible light strip, the red would be negative and the black would be positive. Next, GENTLY secure the locking tray in place by connecting the flexible LED strip light terminals to the connector. Be careful and make sure the mounting tray is closed properly or the lights will not work.
8. Connecting the LED Strip to Power – You are now ready to plug the flexible LED strip light into the LED power supply. Match the positive and negative marks to the positive and negative wires on the power supply. Make sure the power is off when you do this.

If the light strips do not turn on:
1. Wire color doesn’t always matter! Be sure to follow the positive side of the flex strip down through the connector cable to the power supply. Red/Black can mean (+) or (-) depending on which side of the flexible LED strip you have attached the connector to.
2. Another common problem is that the connector may be installed upside down; repeat the above steps and try again.
3. MAKE SURE also that the tray is completely closed. Be gentle!
4. Check your power supply and make sure it is connected correctly, with (+) and (-) correct as well.
5. How many feet of LED strip are you using compared to the size of your power unit? If you are using 1 x 24v Ultra Bright reel with a 2.5 amp power pack it will not work because the power pack is too small.
