What is Serverware?

Typically, the term “Serve” refers to those items from which beverages or food are served, and in some cases, prepared as well. Suffice to say that there are numerous options when it comes to purchasing Serveware, so this tends to make purchasing decisions a bit challenging and tedious. Whether you buy your Serveware online or at a retailer, you should be aware of all the different types of items that fall under this category of dinnerware.

The average individual today accumulates their dinnerware piece by piece after purchasing their first set of dinnerware. Most people today do not have the resources to go out and buy all of their kitchen items, whether it be Serveware or other items. Starting with the basics is always a good idea. Just remember that it’s not a hard and fast rule that all the pieces match. This is especially true when it comes to purchasing tableware over time. Invariably, manufacturers discontinue product lines long before you can finish putting your set together.

Serveware typically falls into one of two general categories: Essential Serveware and Specialty Serveware. The essential server consists of:

* Condiment Sets – may include dipping bowls, hostess sets, salt and pepper shakers, and spice racks

* Oven-to-Table Items – Versatile items used for both food preparation and serving.

* Pitchers: They can be informal, like a plastic pitcher to keep liquids cold in the fridge, or formal ones used for special dinners.

* Serving Bowls – The basic, most essential and most versatile serving item.

* Serving Plates and/or Trays – Second only to serving bowls when it comes to Serveware versatility

* Serving Utensils – Once you have purchased your serving bowls and/or plates or trays, you will need the proper utensils to serve your food with

* Trivet – Often referred to as a “hot plate”, this platform is used to place hot dishes so as not to damage the tablecloth or table top.

On the other hand, Specialty Serveware generally consists of the following pieces:

* Chips and dips: You can just as easily use a bowl to put chips in and serve them; however, these items add a special touch to your dining experience.

*Coffee and Tea Sets – We typically serve our coffee straight from the carafe that comes with our coffee makers, but for special occasions these make a more elegant and formal statement.

* Gravy Boats – Oblong serving dishes that look like boats, some have lids and some don’t, but this item is often considered a must-have piece for the table during the holiday season.

* Outdoor Service: Items used for outdoor entertaining or picnics

* Tureens – larger serving bowls, usually with lids and notched so a ladle can be placed inside the tureen while the lid is on

* Buffets and Warming Pans – These are not always considered essential serving utensils in every home, but they are the ideal item to use to keep large amounts of food warm before serving.
