How to care for a baby parrot in its new home

It is a very exciting time to bring home a new pet parrot. Often an owner has to wait for the new parrot to be old enough to be removed from the breeder, so excitement may have been building for weeks. A new young pet parrot needs some extra care to ensure its safety in the new environment. Planning for your new home should be considered and there should be some knowledge on how to take care of it. Let’s discuss how to care for the newest addition to the family.

The first days in your new home.

Whether it is an older parrot or a young parrot, he does not know any of his new family, so it is understandable that he is afraid. A critical time for a new pet parrot, whether young or not, is in the first few days as they get used to their new surroundings. There will be new noises to scare him, new colors to adjust to, and different activities he’s not used to.

The whole family, especially if there are small children, should be aware that the parrot is likely to be very temperamental at this time. You will want him to be left in his cage with a minimum of attention with just the usual food and water. Before opening his cage, make sure all windows and doors are closed and also when he is first let out of his cage for a walk.

Avoiding problems.

If there are other parrots in the house, the bird should be separated for a while and only slowly introduced to the other parrots. Even then, the introduction must be done under supervision so that the new parrot is not attacked.

Bring a new parrot home in the morning so it has time to see its new surroundings for a few hours and get used to some of the new noises.

To make sure the bird eats, find out from the store or breeder what the parrot’s favorite foods are and make sure they are available.

Clipping their wings.

Make sure his first 3 flying feathers are slightly trimmed so he can’t fly out the door or into the kitchen where he could have an accident.

Your sleeping conditions.

Put a cover over the cage at dusk and keep it covered until the sun comes up. Parrots are used to sleeping at night and covering a parrot cage is the best way to ensure that it gets enough sleep for good health.

parrots feel lonely.

When you introduce a parrot into the family, make sure there are some toys in its new cage so that when it begins to relax, it can play with them and keep busy. Any toy given to the parrot should be checked for safety to ensure that its beak or claw does not get stuck or pieces do not break.

Although parrots are flock birds, it is advisable to talk to him only through the cage for the first few days and not touch him much until he gets used to the family. A parrot that is handled frequently can become a very dependent parrot and that is not good if they are going to be left alone because they will squawk and continue to get attention.

Parrot care by an owner depends on the parrot also being happy when the owner is not around. Encourage the parrot to play with toys during the day when no one else is around.
